Summer Camp Update - Fire Concerns Expressed
Please pass this message to all members and concerned parties asap.
There is much concern being expressed regarding the forest fires situation and how it might affect Summer Camp.
I am in constant communication with people in the area. At present, there is no immediate threat in the area of Summer Camp. However, much can change in the next three weeks, for better or worse. Also, many of us have to travel through areas already affected by fires. Unfortunately, it is a wait and see situation.
Unless the forest service or forest fire service announces a danger in the area, Summer Camp will go forward. Summer Camp 2015 was surrounded by fires and smoke, and numbers were down because of that, but we still had a successful camp.
Most important! - every member and family needs to make individual decisions regarding their participation based on their own comfort levels regarding smoke, driving conditions, fire proximity, and the resort's cancellation policy if you have registered at the resort.
Here is the cancellation policy as sent to me from Takysie Resort:
- 2 weeks prior notice – no charge
- 1 week prior – 50% charge
- 3 to 5 days prior – 75% charge
- 3 days’ notice – no refund
If there is an immediate danger in the area, we will cancel camp. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you posted. Please do your part by passing these messages on to all of your members and other concerned parties asap.
Stay safe while enjoying the Summer.
Phillip Crewe - Summer Camp Director and 2nd VP, BCLS.

Thank-you Jerome and Sandra - Exploration Weekend
Thank-you Jerome and Sandra for hosting club members this weekend for the club campout and exploration trips. Lots of territory covered, and a few new sites identified for Rendezvous 2018.
Sowet Owl - neck swivel. |
Cool to look at, but too risky for a big field trip. |
A wet and cool day, but thanks to Barry for guiding us in the Greenwood area. |
The two wildflower photographers in my truck passed up some great opportunities - can't stop a rock hound convoy for flowers!

BCLS Calendar Contest
Have a cool rock photo to share? BCLS Calendar contest deadline July 1st.
Rules and regs: http://www.bclapidary.com/contests.html
A
Note from the Calendar Girl February
8th 2017.
The
BCLS 2018 Calendar Photo Contest is in happening again. I am looking forward to coordinating the BCLS
Calendar for my third year. We are
looking for photos of your rockhounding finds, from BC.
I
would like to share a few tips on submitting photos for our contest.
The
style of calendar that we print has the photos printed to the very edge of the
page. In printing terms this means that
we need to have bleed. The photos must
actually be ¼” larger than the page, all the way around, so that it overlaps
the edge, in order to print this way. If
the photo is not large enough, the image will run off the edge of the
page. So don’t over crop your
photos. We will crop if necessary.
The
calendar that the society produces is in landscape format. That means the pages are wider than they are
high. The size is 11 x 8 ½”. It is difficult and sometimes impossible to
use portrait oriented photographs in this style of calendar. Please submit landscape oriented photos.
If
you have a background, choose it carefully.
A contrast is nice. Make sure it
compliments your specimen, but doesn’t compete with it. It should never be distracting. In general, lighter colour specimens look
good on darker back grounds and vice versa.
Make
sure you read the rules. The complete
set of rules for the contest are posted on the BCLS website.
It
is quite acceptable to reshoot your specimens and submit them again.
We
are looking for photographs that will make people want to go out rockhounding
themselves.
The
contest closes Canada Day, July 1st 2017.
Thanks,
Denise,
