Rendezvous 2022

RENDEZVOUS 2022

Coombs, BC

(June 2nd to 6th, Thursday to Monday)

Host Clubs: Vancouver Island Zone

Victory Lapidary and Mineral Society, Cowichan Valley Rockhounds, Parksville & District Rock & Gem,

Courtenay Gem and Mineral Club, Alberni Valley Rock & Gem, Ripple Rock Gem & Mineral Club

General Information: Event Blog

Vancouver Island Rock & Gem Clubs are pleased to invite you to Rendezvous 2022! It will be

held at the historic Coombs Fair Grounds. There are many attractions in the area such as Goats

on the Roof and The Butterfly Gardens. The Horn Lake Caves, Qualicum Falls and Englishman

River Falls Provincial Parks offer great hiking and exploring for those who might like to spend

more time in the area. This is a very popular, well-known tourist area so it is great to have such

a comfortable venue close to so many alternate activities and attractions.

There is ample room for dry RV camping and tenting on the grounds (a few electrical hookups

may be made available to support any special needs). No showers are available but there is

running hot and cold water in the bathrooms in Arrowsmith Hall. We will try to set up a shower

tent for those who are willing to brave a cool shower. The cost for these spots is $15 per night

with check-in starting at 2:00 pm Thursday afternoon. Dogs are welcome at no extra charge.

There are two provincial campgrounds nearby, as well as a private campground down the

street, called Coombs Country Campground, for those requiring full hook-ups. There are, of

course, many motels in the Parksville/Qualicum area for those who do not camp.

We have three full days of fun, engaging activities planned with choices for those wishing a very

active experience or a more laid back one.

Registration:

Full info and registration forms will be posted on the BCLS website in November, at which time

we will ask BCLS to send out e-mail notification that the materials are posted.

Summer Camp?

Seeking Proposals for Summer Camp 2022
The BCLS Executive is entertaining ideas from parties interested in organizing this event in 2022

Dear members,

The Executive will be entertaining proposals from parties interested in hosting Summer Camp 2022. If a club - or an individual member - has the desire to organize Summer Camp 2022 please reach out to us by email or phone.

The event typically takes place in August and is focused in a generally "unexplored" region of the province. You can learn more about Summer Camp here:

https://www.bclapidary.com/rock-hunting-summer-camp.php

It would be wonderful if this event makes a return in 2022 but if no suitable proposals are received by early 2022 we will officially cancel the event.

Sincerely,

Andrew Danneffel

Kyanite from Brazil

Hello club members :)

I received a parcel of Kyanite from Brazil, the  location is a mine at Sao Jose Da Safira, Minas Gerais.

My source selected these pieces out of a 40 kg lot specially for me, most of it is a nice dark cyan, translucent and gemmy, perfect for jewelery and pendants.

I am offering this to Penticton Club members at .50 per gram, pieces run from $2 to $12.

There are also much larger specimen pieces available.

If anyone is interested please contact me for an appointment.

 Thank you

Survey in the mail or e-mail

Penticton Geology and Lapidary Club

                                                                                                                June 26, 2021

Please take the time to insert your comments, and reply by July 15th

Background:

·         The club has not been active because of covid

·         Efforts to get new people to serve on the executive have not been successful

·         There has been discussion regarding fewer meetings and more of an emphasis on field trips, and how we proceed post pandemic

Executive Meeting:

·         The outgoing executive members met this morning to discuss the future direction of the club.

·         Given the current heat wave, and our past issues cancelling field trips in the summer due to weather and fire, we will not be holding any field trips in July and August.

·         There are now 14 individuals who have shown interest in joining the club.

·         We have members from Summerland to Osoyoos, and Keremeos to Rock Creek. This means that any planned event requires travel for members.

·         The Covid shut down of BC Lapidary Society events has left a large gap in the annual calendar.

·         Decision to send a survey to members and prospective members.

·         We need a new meeting place, and tentatively would have a general meeting September 1st.

·         We are asking for your input by July 15th, so any proposed changes etc can be included with a notice of meeting.

Survey:

Please insert your comments below.

·         What is your main interest in being a part of the club?

·         We are the Penticton Club, but collecting sites are not close. Most of our recent trips have been in the Kettle Valley and Similkameen. Do longer day trips interest you?

·         Are you equipped/interested in field trips that involve camping?

·         Do you have skills/interest in serving on the executive, with a mentor to help you get started?

o   Basic book keeping? Collection of dues, submit dues to BC Lapidary Society

o   Basic secretarial (meeting minutes)

o   Leadership skills for chairing meetings and planning

·         The past monthly meetings have been  September – November, Christmas Party, April – June. A suggestion has been made that September and April are key meetings, but other gatherings could be field trips. Your thoughts?

·         We need three “Wagonmaster” volunteers to learn the ropes and lead field trips. Would you be willing to lead trips, learning from a mentor? Do you have skills and interest in GPS mapping roads to sites.

Rob has been busy!

When Rob first joined the club, he told me his interest was mostly collecting specimens, not so much the lapidary side of things. He has been very busy - here is his update.

I've been quite active over the past year, acquiring and restoring used equipment as well as field collecting, cutting, researching, curating, historical photos... I've found  some really cool stuff including mineral ore specimens I've cut with visible gold!

I am actively working on importing some spectacular  items from Brazil through a good friend there, about 200kg of assorted specimens and crystals, select quality items direct from the garimperos.

The smaller kyanite shown are gem or near gem grade, they are mine I have over 10 kg. so far

In exactly one year I've managed to put together an impressive  shop including - 6 saws from 8" trim, 10" cabinet, 14" drop saw, an 18" saw (all Lortone) an 18" Covington with oil cleaner and, a monster 30" wet saw!

Polishing equipment  includes  2- 20" oscillating laps with 8 pans in restoration (courtesy Lindea 1120 club)  I Restored a nice 12" covington rotary lap,  grits, accessories,  10# Dunbar tumbler,  flexible shaft machine, jewelry making tools and more.

Next on the agenda,  getting polishing arbors/ wheels for cabbing set up.

I really miss the social aspect and I've been  wondering what all of you others have been up to

If anyone  wants to visit  once covid settles  down I am more than happy  to open my doors and have socially distance  covid safely appropriate visits by prior arrangement.

Anyone is more than welcome  to contact  me any time.

I would invite  others to post and we can see what each other  have been up to and maybe make some plans for  the future  when appropriate.

Sincere best regards to all

Rob Webster
